Employer question
How to assess German trade certificates in Australia
German trade certificates are useful context, but they are not a complete hiring decision. Australian employers need to separate four questions: what the person trained in, what they actually do, what the Australian role needs and what official checks may apply.
HGT does not provide migration, legal, licensing or tax advice, and does not provide recruitment, labour-hire or employment agency services. Use the official sources below and check with the relevant regulator, assessing body, RTO or authorised adviser before making sponsorship, licensing or employment commitments.
Short answer
What Australian employers should know
Assess German trade certificates as evidence, not as a shortcut. Start with the certificate and translation, then test it against recent work history, task evidence, references, Australian role requirements and any licensing or skills-assessment pathway.
HGT can help employers structure that initial review. It does not issue recognition, approve licences, provide migration advice or certify that a candidate is eligible for an Australian role.
Four-way check
Separate qualification, work history, role need and official pathway
Most confusion comes from treating one document as if it answered every question. A certificate can tell you training background; it does not prove current fit, licensing status or visa eligibility.
- Qualification: what did the person complete, and in which German trade context?
- Work history: what tasks have they done recently and independently?
- Australian role: what tasks, standards, supervision and safety communication does the employer need?
- Official pathway: does the visa, skills assessment or licensing context require an authority to review it?
Evidence quality
Ask for work evidence alongside documents
Certificates matter more when they sit beside recent evidence. Strong employer briefs ask for work examples in the same structure the workplace uses day to day.
- Request task lists, photos or project examples where appropriate.
- Ask references about responsibility level, independence and safety behaviour.
- Check machines, systems, tools, materials and standards used in recent work.
Official checks
Know when employer review has to stop
Employer review can decide whether a profile deserves closer attention. It cannot replace a formal assessment, regulator decision or migration pathway review.
- Use Home Affairs and TRA pages for current migration and skills-assessment requirements.
- Use state or territory regulators for licensed work such as electrical, plumbing or gas tasks.
- Get advice before making promises about sponsorship, licence outcomes or start dates.
Employer checklist
A simple employer assessment framework
Use this structure before deciding whether a German trade certificate supports an Australian hiring brief.
- Document: certificate, apprenticeship evidence and translation where needed.
- Tasks: current day-to-day work, tools, systems, materials and responsibility level.
- Evidence: references, photos, tests, project examples or machine/control lists.
- Australian role: job title, duties, pay, location, supervision and onboarding plan.
- Authority check: migration adviser, Home Affairs, TRA, regulator, RTO or licensed specialist where relevant.

Employer FAQs
Common early questions
These answers help shape the first employer review. They do not replace official assessment, licensing or migration advice.
Can an Australian employer rely on a German trade certificate alone?
No. The certificate is useful evidence, but employers should also check current work history, role fit, references and any official assessment or licensing requirements.
Is a skills assessment the same as a licence?
No. A skills assessment, qualification recognition and an occupational licence can be separate questions. Licensed work needs the relevant regulator or pathway to be checked.
What does HGT do with certificate information?
HGT uses it to structure employer questions and role-fit review. It does not certify documents or make official recognition decisions.
